The dangerous (to plants, that is) Tobacco Mosaic Virus (TMV) was not only the first plant virus discovered, but THE FIRST VIRUS EVER discovered. TMV can survive a long time in a dormant state, and can even be spread to a plant by a farmer who has recently smoked tobacco! Once a plant becomes infected, it can be hard to control TMV. Aphids and other pests can spread the virus from plant to plant.
